Mortises are one-half of one of the mainstays of woodworking joinery, and the Powermatic Hollow Chisel Mortiser Machine Bit Set helps you make them precisely and quickly. Mortise-and-tenon joints are among the strongest joints in woodworking, and are used for projects that have frame construction and need to be strong. They’re especially useful for chairs, tables, and other furniture. A successful mortise-and-tenon joint requires precision, care, and the right tools and accessories. Powermatic’s set of bits will help get you there. Maybe you’ve been accustomed to making your mortises with hand chisels. This set lets you take your work up a notch with a more precise and faster approach to creating these important holes. Four bits come in this set, and they’re compatible with drill bits and a variety of mortising machines, thanks to their flexible, extra-long bit design. The auger bit cuts a round hole and the chisel bit, driven into the wood by the drill press or mortising machine, squares off the round hole. Then, you use tenons to complete the joining process. Made of tough carbon steel, the bits make reliably clean cuts with smooth side walls. Bit sizes are ¼ inch, 5/16 inch, 3/8 inch, and ½ inch. Each bit has 1 cutting edge, 1 spur and a brad point for superior performance, making consistently clean and truly square cuts, ideal for whatever woodworking project you’re working on. Here’s the process: Mark the mortise on your board. Choose a mortising bit that matches the width of your mortise as closely as possible, without going over. Position your workpiece under the bit. Set the depth of cut on the tool. Drilling slowly, make your first hole at one end of the mortise. Make the next pass at the other end of the mortise. Overlapping by half the width of the bit, drill/chisel out the rest of the mortise. Clean the hole up with a chisel if necessary. The Powermatic set of mortise chisel bits will help you make these mortises with ease.
