It sits on top of flooring, surface mounted on flooring. Louvered design is easy for air flow. With adjustable sliding damper on backside to control air flow easily. Oak drop in floor register is surface-mounted on hardwood flooring, or it fits over the surface of floor duct opening, it can drop into opening cut very easily in the existing floor. This kind of vent is not recommended for use in traffic areas.
